Graduation and a little less.

It doesn’t seem 2 weeks ago that I was leaving my family at the airport, ready to begin my adventure of summer 2010. So much has happened yet it literally seems like a blur. Almost dream like. It feels as though I should still be in my 4th or 5th week, finally getting settled into my job and planning days out with my house mates. But yesterday marked the almost end of an amazing time at Disney. Yesterday was our ICP graduation. The whole day was amazing. It was the first of many that all of us as a house had been together for a day. The morning consisted of 4 of us venturing down to the Magic Kingdom to have our faces painted and to stalk princesses. It was the first day I had had proper photographs with characters too. We met the Fairy Godmother, Aurora, Cinderella, Ariel, Eric and Belle. A brilliant morning.
In the afternoon hours we just took our time getting ready for graduation. Dolling ourselves up and taking photographs to highlight the end. Our first group photo as a house was captured, which will be on facebook soon!
The actual graduation celebration wasn’t anything special. You get your hat and certificate and some food, drink, photographs. But its mainly just a time to chill out with friends you may not see in a while, or have a relax etc. The 4 of us (Us being April, Jade, Helen and myself) left around 8pm to have some well deserved food at Downtown Disneys Trex. That was so cool! Definitely go if you get the chance. You can experience a meteor shower whilst eating! Whuu! We also built dinosaurs. In the style of the Build a Bear Workshop. I made Eddie T. Ceratops the Triceratops. Hes green and cute.
Also, if you get a chance see Inception. We legged it to go and see this film and were lucky to make the last showing after a full on sprint and multiple wardrobe malfunctions to get there. Genuinely one of the best films i have seen. Close in par with Avatar (I’m also a poet if you didn’t know it). You have to concentrate though and you may also need a few tissues.

Today we received some absolutely devastating news. Our house mate April has made the decision to self terminate. With 2 weeks left she said that the work side of the programme was getting her down. She didn’t want the last weeks of work to be forced and just ruin what could have been a fantastic ending to a summer. I guess she is right. Working right up until the end of your programme, with literally one day to spend together before you leave isn’t really enough, or helpful. We worked out that we have 2 more days off and none of us are off together barring the last Thursday. The novelty of working has definitely worn off and now its just working because we have to, not because we need the money to do things or for the experience. If I get the opportunity to complete another programme next year, I will most probably book an extra week in Orlando or wherever, just to chill out and relax before going home.

April, I hope you have an amazing time back at home for the next couple of weeks before we come and attack your house :) Get very drunk, drink lots of tea, eat fish and chips and shepherds pie without salad but with peas! We will all miss you!!! Have a safe flight back to the UK on Sunday and don’t forget to Skype us!! I can’t wait for us all to meet up in August/September and reminisce. Thank you for the fun times! We love you!!

The countdown home has begun…

I logged on to the Delta website today to check my seats and baggage and what not. They were kind enough to tell me that I have 24 days until my next international flight with them. Thanks Delta, thanks alot for making me even more depressed. Its so sad. We have been trying to figure out what we are going to do on the morning of the end of the world (slight exaggeration). Its difficult, we all have flights at different times. Jades at 3.25pm, Aprils at 6.30pm and mine at 4.30pm. Helens staying for an extra week with her family, lucky. So far we have breakfast planned. Then we have to be out of the place by 11am, so god knows what were going to do for 2 hours.
Fitting in everything we want to do is a slight issue too. First with money, then with time. I recommend to everyone doing the programme next year to bring as much money as you can possibly save up, to avoid being stuck for things to do that are free. These next few weeks coming all of our schedules are completely different, so as soon as you get here and get your work loads sorted be sure you and your room mates book the same few days of in the weeks leading up to leaving so your not having to wind your managers up by asking for ER’s or calling in sick.

Also, anything I dont get done in these next few weeks I can do in October. Yeah, I bought a flight last week so I can come with my parents. Thats how much I dont want to leave! :(

I sent off my application for next years college programme this morning. I updated my CV to include Walt Disney World and changed my status to previously Employed by Disney. I just have to wait until September for a response.
If all goes well, I’ll be booking a flexible flight asap. I will definitly be travelling next year. I’m a little gutted that I’m not this time.

On Saturday, we went to Beaches and Cream. YYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!! We had it!! We had a Kitchen Sink!! It was amazing! So much fun I tell you! They made an announcement that we were going to attempt to eat the whole thing. We didn’t. When we were full we just ordered a plate of onion rings to wash it down =p

I had a fish and chips from the United Kingdom pavilion that day too. To be honest, it wasn’t that great. You got about 3 chips that tasted like polystyrene, and 2 decent sized slivers of fish…which would have been perfect if the batter wasn’t to salty and chewy. They were swimming in vinegar though so, that kind of makes up for it. I just decided that a proper English fish and chips is needed when I land home…Mum, Dad…Take note!! Haha.
Kieran came to Orlando at the weekend too! He made it! We had a great time…Exctept the finding him part.
‘Im by the big white ball’ and ‘Im now in mousegear’ Which by the way is one of the biggest stores on Disney property. Thanks for the mouse chace! But we had a mooch in Epcot and then went over to Hollywood Studios. He’s coming down again with his Hilton Head Islanders in a couple of weeks…Gets put up in a Disney Hotel for free!

Anyway, I’m going to take my depressed self to work…Thanks for reading!!!

ER (But not the gory kind)

There are many perks to working in Food and Beverage. Perks that cancel out the fact that you are most likely to go home smelling like buttery popcorn and vinegar from cleaning (yes they use vinegar to clean).

1.When it rains a little, everything gets covered and you hide under whatever shelter you have. When it rains hard, and theres lightening in the area, it gets called 101. This means all the wagons close and you take cover at the nearest building. When it doesn’t stop, ERs get given out because people don’t want soggy popcorn. An ER is an early release. Last week I got given 3 ERs because of rain. Its a nice surprise when a manager approaches you and says ‘Hey, your going home’ almost 3 or 4 hours early.

2. The typical pay for food and beverage is $7.53 (or something) per hour. However, food and beverage in Magic Kingdom earns an extra 75c per hour and outdoor foods apparently earns an extra $1 and hour! This would explain my weekly pay checks. So if your in ODF, be happy because you’ll be minted!

3. You get a tan. Even if it does include dodgy lines from the wonderful array of costumes you wear.

It was July 4th on Sunday. I was working Fantasyland right near the castle. So as you can imagine it was unbelievably busy. Firstly I don’t know why any sane person would go to Disney on July 4th. It was crazy. I was working ice cream and I litteraly did not stop to take a breath in a little over 5 hours. And only then did I stop because it was break time. It was fun though. Everyone was in a great mood, all clad in red, white and blue gear, and also asking why I was working that day, obviously being English. In a nice way, no one wanted to kill me. The fireworks were spectacular. It’s crazy how Disney come up with displays as such and how and when it is rehearsed. They had fireworks which exploded in star shapes and the star spangled banner. It was amazing! Even if I watched them from my ice cream cart :)

This week my house mates and I have been trying to figure out how we are going to fit all the stuff we want to do into the next 4 weeks. I can tell you now its not going to happen. We all have different days off. One thing I will be absolutely gutted about is if we don’t go to Miami. But I suppose I’ll just have to apply again next year!
We also decided that now is the time to start collecting stuff for people back home. Its scary how fast this thing has actually gone :(

Well, i’m off to do some washing! Thanks for reading!!
